Philip S. Bernard, M.D.
Dr. Philip Bernard previously served as a tenured Professor in the Department of Pathology and an Investigator at the Huntsman Cancer Institute at The University of Utah, where he led extramural research programs and directed high‑complexity clinical laboratories. A licensed physician and board‑certified Clinical Pathologist, he has held leadership roles including Medical Director of Oncology & Pharmacogenetics at ARUP Laboratories and Medical Director at Reveal Genomics, overseeing the HER2DX gene‑expression breast cancer assay. His academic work has focused on improving prognostic and predictive strategies in oncology, including co‑developing the PAM50/Prosigna breast cancer signature, which has been validated in clinical trials and demonstrated clear clinical utility. His more recent research has centered on advanced and metastatic cancers, identifying biomarkers of immune activation in high‑risk breast cancer subtypes. He retains an appointment as Adjunct Professor of Pathology at The University of Utah, and is Chief Scientific Officer at Lenas Laboratory Consults.
Jimmy Lenas, MS, MLS(ASCP), MB
Jimmy Lenas holds a BS in Biology from St. Petersburg College and an MS in Clinical Laboratory Science from George Washington University. He completed his clinical training at Bayfront’s School of Medical Technology and is a licensed Clinical Laboratory Supervisor in the state of Florida, with certifications in Medical Laboratory Science and Molecular Biology from the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
Jimmy’s career began at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, where he spent seven years advancing from a specimen processor to a lead medical technologist. During his tenure, he gained extensive training in various specialties, including chemistry, hematology, blood banking, microbiology, immunology, and molecular biology. He has experience performing flow cytometry for leukemia workups, next-generation sequencing for cardiovascular mutations, and validating COVID-19 PCR testing platforms at the onset of the pandemic. Additionally, he played a key role in establishing a CLIA-certified high-complexity clinical laboratory, which included laboratory operations and assay validation.
Currently, Jimmy supervises the Molecular Pathology department at Atrium Health’s Core Laboratory and is proud owner of Lenas Laboratory Consults LLC.
